On 1 December each year World AIDs day is marked across the globe, and this year is the 30th anniversary of this important day. It is an important opportunity for people to come together in the fight against HIV, to show support for those living with HIV and to remember those who have died from an AIDS related illness. The symbolic red ribbon will be seen across the globe as people come together on this day.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus which attacks the immune system. The virus stays in the body for life, but treatment can keep the virus under control and protect the immune system. Without treatment people with HIV can develop AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). AIDS is the most advanced stage of the HIV infection, when the immune system can no longer fight infections. Someone with AIDS has both HIV and at least one of a specific list of ‘AIDS-defining’ diseases, which includes tuberculosis and some types of cancer.

- Vaginal or anal sex without a condom if your partner has an unknown HIV status, a detectable viral load and you aren’t taking PrEP (pre-exposure Prophylaxis drug) —high risk
- Sharing injecting drug equipment—high risk
- Oral sex—low risk
A woman can pass HIV onto her baby in the womb, during childbirth and from breastfeeding, though effective HIV medication makes this extremely unlikely.

Nationally there are more than 101,000 people living with HIV, and globally there are 69.7 million people who have the virus. In Bolton there are over 300 people currently living with HIV, they are treated and supported by SHINE, Bolton’s integrated sexual health service run by Bolton Foundation Trust. Bolton also commissions the PaSH partnership made up of 3 agencies offering tailored support for those living with and at risk of HIV.
The Greater Manchester region has recently committed to becoming a Fast-Track City region, this is a promise to ensure that 90% of people living with HIV know their status, improve access to ART for this 90% and to increase to 90% the proportion of people living with HIV on ART with undetectable viral load. On 30th November the leaders of the 10 Greater Manchester Authorities, along with the City Region Mayor Andy Burnham, will meet to firm their commitment to this. The PrEP Impact trial is well underway, with 13,000 people nationally in high risk groups being offered the pre-exposure Prophylaxis drug, which can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV when taken as instructed. Full details of the trial can be found here.
